Cowan Darroch Duo, 20th May 2020
The Darroch/Cowan Duo have curated two programmes that will showcase the richness and variety of music written for flute and guitar. Featuring the sizzling offerings of Argentinians Piazzolla and Golijov, the soulful, grammy-nominated ‘Mountain Songs’ of Robert Beaser, and the evocative music of two of this century’s leading female composers, Joan Tower and Katherine Hoover. The programmes also introduce New Zealand audiences new music from composers that the duo collaborate with in Montréal: the new-generation composer Jason Noble (b. 1980), and one of the pillars of Canadian contemporary composition, Brian Cherney (b.1942).
New Zealand flutist Hannah Darroch is currently a course lecturer and flute and chamber music instructor at McGill University in Montréal. Before relocating to Canada, Hannah worked regularly on both flute and piccolo with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Wellington.
Canadian guitarist Steve Cowan has performed and taught extensively throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. His critically acclaimed debut album, Pour guitare, has helped to establish him as “one of Canada’s top contemporary classical guitarists” (Classical Guitar Magazine). He is on faculty as a guitar instructor at McGill University in Montréal.
